Yes, I know I am very late and that others who started well after me are now streaking ahead, but I have a letter after my name finally. I tried not to be too fussy when putting it together...you know worrying over the same fabrics touching. The only unpicking I did was when I sewed one of the side strips upside down, that did look odd enough to warrant fixing.
So now it is back to the appliques.

The Story So Far...Not a Lot of Chapters!...

My story so far...

The chapters are incomplete...there is still a fair bit of story to be written for each block...it seems my modus operandi for this quilt is one technique at a time, who knows why it is just how it is speaking to me, so applique is happening first, stitchery will be next once all the appliques are ticked off so it will be a little while before I have actual blocks to go on the sidebar. But as I'm now up to the applique for the March blocks while March has some weeks left in it so I'm counting that as on track(ish)...it's my version of the track, I have so much trouble travelling in a straight line *LOL*...

Oh and I know the appliques are backwards and yes that is the back cover of the book..but when you don't realise you've done that until way after it is too late, it is time to move on and just live with it...so I am...

Hello there, I'm just giving an update on my progress. I have Dec. - March applique downed and a couple of the blocks embroidered.

Next is to finish the embroidery work and get the sashing rows sewn on.

But I took a break from these and made one of the other project she has in the book. I made a shoe bag.

So cute

There are a couple of other projects I plan on making too.

The bag and pincushion.

This book is chocked full of fun projects.

Hello! :)

My name is Cherise and I'm new here! I discovered this blog when you guys were almost finished with your 'Tis the Season Quilts. I just loved them! I thought it would be so cool to quilt a long with you. I emailed Chookyblue and told her I was interested in joining you in the SKOW QAL. At the time she told me there were more than 10 people ahead of me. I thought there was no way I'd ever be included here. I got the book anyway and planned on following along on my own. Time went by and I never got started. Then out of the blue, at the end of January, Chookyblue emailed me and told me I was in! Thank you so much! :) I was excited but already so far behind. I immediately started thinking about what fabrics I wanted to use. I thought, thought and thought some more. I kept coming up with ideas and then changed my mind over and over again. All the sudden it was the end of February. Then I finally made a decision. I choose these . . .

The Pam Kitty Morning Collection! I absolutely love the vibrant colors! :) I ordered quite a few of the fabrics from The Quilting Bug. They arrived very quickly! Here's close-ups of the prints I got . . .

I got 1/2 yard each of these polka dots and checked fabrics. That way I can use a lot of them in the borders, columns, blocks and appliques. I only ordered 1/4 yard of all of the rest, but got a big variety to use. Here they are . . .

Yes I got ~~a little~~ carried away. ;) I just couldn't decide as they were all so yummy! :) Believe it or not there are more patterns in this collection! I love it! I'm going to be using White Kona Cotton for all the applique blocks. The borders and columns will be a mix of the prints and some whites I have on hand. I'm going to be blanket stitching the appliques instead of needle turn. I just love the look of it. I'm hoping of getting started cutting the fabrics tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to catch up pretty quick. Wish me luck! :) Thank you all so much for having me here! I'm so excited to join you! :)

My SKoW so far

December, January and February

and I can relax now until June,

the cat block is done, I just need to sew it onto the strip

The sewing block (May) I have the shoe block and the best friends done too

My husband says I have to much time on my hands lol, but I don't really I stitch everynight for

around 4 hours, uninterupted

Love it :)

I haven't done the top or bottom borders, I am going to wait until the top is

together to get the right balance of beige-ness (is that a proper word??)

A little late but here is the final block in the February set of blocks. I love reading and although Pride & Prejudice is a great book I didnt want to favour just one.

Here is December, January & February - including the set of strips that will go along the bottom. So I am officially up to date now.

and a toe with red polish just snuck in!!

While I was busy with the camera - Levi the dog was watching and wondering what on earth I was up to. The cat was sunning himslef in the window - oblivious to all.

March blocks are almost done so hopefully I will make the "deadline". And get some other stuff done.

After a ~~swift kick~~ email from Chooky I have got my act together and caught up. I actually am enjoying this process and dont think my needleturn is coming out too bad considering Im a first timer, and it was so much easier this time round with all the strips and squares cut and the two patch and four patches already made. So here we have January and February joined with the December strip as well as the bottom strip waiting to be joined.

This is the first 2 rows finally together. It was quite easy to do and came together quickly. I have decided to not join the rows together as I go as I like to lay it all out so as to not get the same strips next to each other and only be left with a small selection for the final rows. I will be able to start row 3 when I return from a few days away with DH and then I hope I can keep on track. Bye for now Jude from judesstuff.

Made it on time. Great to have the extra day this month. Thankyou Chooky-Blue for reminder. My strawberry ice-cream was a must on a hot summers day. When my friends and I went out for our stitching shop we would stop for Hot Chocolate and marshmallows. I`ve added my Bible as my good read sometime each day. Then there`s my bottom border ready to go.

Well I`m ready for next months part. Really pleased with quilt top so far. Till next month,thinking of fabrics for that now.

I'm way behind, but this afternoon I have made a big effort on catching up. I'm cutting the little squares. Just how many are there??!!!!!! I wish they'd breed, then I wouldn't have to cut so many LOL.

Oooooooh I have had the hurry up from Chockyblue so here is my update, I have not been idle......

My SAL is coming along pretty good, considering I didnt get my fabric till the middle of January, and have been working some longish hours and have often been totally stuffed when I have got home.
So here are some pics of what has been happening in my house with SKoW... I have used a lot of Buggy Barns Creamery Neutrals for my backgrounds and a couple of others that fit in well too. I am really pleased with all the fabrics.

Have loved watching progress of others and are really enjoying this SAL. I hope to have another progress of the needleturn blocks again next week.

A Virtual Kick

OK Chookyblue, I got the hint and the 'virtual' kick up the backside. I haven't been 'slacking' on the stitchery front, really! Look!

I am still stitching and am up to date as far as the months go, however, I have chosen to leave all the piecing until the end - sorry, I know that the piecing is part of the SAL but I just haven't decided on fabrics for it so rather than make a bad decision I'd rather wait until the end and see what suits.
Chookyblue, if I'm in for a walloping please make it with a wet bus ticket *wink*

I loved " Eat, Pray, Love" too Sharon but fantasy is really, really what I prefer !!

Making Progress - December and January Finished

Sunday was a lovely wet drizzly day here, so was perfect for stitching. I had been struggling to get a day where I could make a big mess while putting some sashings together so that I could finish December and January's sections. Finally the day had arrived.

So, what have I achieved?

I made all the sashings for the quilt, except for the top row, which needs a stitchery to be completed, and pieced all the squares for the second column of blocks. December is completed.

Rather appropriate, given the weather.

I also tailored the suitcase block to suit me. I changed "Rome" to "Paris" and "USA" to "IOM" (Isle of Man). I haven't been to New Zealand, but plan to in the next few years, so I left that there.

January's blocks are also finished.

Like everyone else, I have found it hard to get a photo once it was all sewn together.

The bottom sashing is completed, but was too hard to show in the photo, so please tick me off for the two months.

My plan was to be up to date by the end of February – I still have 2 days to go, but it is not looking very promising. Then again, if I really make an effort….we’ll see.

All Caught Up......

Finally I'm all caught up, for 3 days I even slightly ahead! My bottom borders are done but not visable hanging over the skirt hanger behind my cake block.

Of course, there were dramas - the furballs did fly in the Quilt Kitty household. I always cut my blocks bigger than specified but one Friday night I must have been very taken with Midsummer Murders as my ice cream cone finished up on a very definate angle. In order to cut out a fairly straight block I ended up with a 10 inch high block rather than 10.5 inches. So after careful thought while lying awake in the dark later that night I came up with a solution that didn't mean starting that block again. I trimmed a bit here & there and added another row of 1 inch blocks between my coffee cup & book blocks. Problem solved & now I cut my blocks with even more excess!

My coffee cup block is actually the hot chocolate block but as I prefer coffee to hot chocolate so I made another change. I think it is easy to see why this is my favourite block to date. Purrrrfect!

Here's my book block too. I pondered long & hard on which book to portray but couldn't come up with one I knew I would be happy to still be looking at in 10 years time. Being a total readaholic to the point where it interferes with my sewing, I thought of just titling it 'To All The Books I've Loved Before......'. However a kitty reference prevailed and I settled for The Cat Who in deference to the cosy mystery series of 29 books by Lilian Jackson Braun which featured two Siamese cats Koko & Yum Yum who helped their owner to solve crime in their small town.

Quick Chooky - mark me off for December, January & February at last! I can't believe it's nearly March already, roll on winter.

Finally December is done!!!!

I really thought when I decided to start in January I’d be able to catch up quickly. Boy did I get that wrong!!!! As you all already know, there’s a lot of work in this quilt. :-)

Anyway, I have put in a lot of work & I’m really enjoying it, so it’s all good.
I’ve had a lot of stress in my life lately, with no relief in sight, so this project has almost kept me sane!!!!

Being OCD I love to have all my fabrics organised. I cut a bunch of squares so I had a stash. I’m hand piecing all the little sections that go between the blocks as I love to hand piece. I did machine on the long strips just so I could something finished!!!! I have already started on the January & February blocks, so hopefully I might catch up by the end of next month!!!

My fabric is from the Ruby range with a few Bliss & some other bits & bobs from my stash. I’ve had the most trouble finding the neutrals, luckily I had some, as they are a bit thin underfoot in the shops.

Sorry I haven’t been commenting lately but i have enjoyed having a peep at everyone else’s beautiful work.

Slowly making progress

I finished the ice cream from Feb's to do list in January

last night I finally got the time to

do the prep work for the

'Hot chocolate'

and

'A good book'

I managed to get the applique on both

done with just the feature stitching left

Today I managed to get the prep work done for March's

block's

'Home' and 'Flowers'

and the remaining blocks are all traced onto freezer paper

and cut out, makes it much easier for me to

keep on track.

I have decided just to keep going with the quilt

until its done, it keeps my mind and hands busy

with no real time to dwell on the big scary stuff that

is happening within my immediate family :(

February Greetings from Finland - SKoW and GJ news

Let's begin with My Favorite Things!

... and you'll learn again some finnish words ;o)

My favorite ice cream is (has been over 40 years) herkkutrio (one product of finnish dairy, Valio). There is three different taste in it... strawberry, vanilla and chocolate. Unfortunately it's no longer taste as good as a kid, but it taste good enough. Especially when the summer day is hot!

Oh, I already miss the Summer...

At this moment outside is -7 degrees of Celsius. It's snowing and blowing. So when you have skied or walked in such weather as it's now, nothing is better than a cup of really hot chocolate... in finnish kuuma kaakao. I changed the place of the words, because I didn't want to cover that pretty rose on the mug.

And if you don't want to go outside, nothing is better than take a cup of choko and curl up to read your favorite armchair. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is in finnish Ylpeys ja ennakkoluulo AND a good book is hyvä kirja. It's funny, I have only english version of it at my bookshelf, but I have never read it in full. I purchased it when I saw it as a series in TV.

Oh, Mr Darcy was Colin Firth!

Hopefully you aren't totally bored with my tale, because it'll continue...

I've thought about just sew two stripes instead of three... BUT I'm not yet quite sure about that! Maybe those alterations are too much and it's not Annie's lovely pattern anymore...

Chookyblue, shall I get one mark (D or J) beside my name? ;o) please...

And I would like to have more of these lovely new fabrics of Moda.

I have only one layer cake of 'Papillon'. Perhaps in March there is hope to get them more...

In the end some news from my Gardener's Journal...

... I started to quilt it by hand, the sashings on the middle block, but it took too much time

(and I'm little afraid of Chookyblue's whip)

so I'll machine quilt it, except the outer borders. They I'll quilt by hand ;o)

I have a goal to FINISH myGJ in MARCH!!!

So keep all your fingers crossed that I can make it!

SKoW - Back on Track

Dear SKoW friends . . . just wanted to let you know I am still around, I came to a grinding halt due to a very persistent virus which has hit me now three times and I am really over it!! Dr. finally gave me much stronger antibiotics, so hopefully back on the mend.

I have been keeping up to date with all of your posts and I think by the looks of it we are all really enjoying this wonderful project! Everyone is putting their own special touches to each panel - well done.

I am including a pic of some of my completed blocks - I had been enjoying the needle turn until the virus, so back on track hopefully this weekend.

I must admit.

I haven't got a single panel ready yet,

but it doesn't mean, that I'm not working on this lovely projekt!

Lots of blocks just waiting for panels!

Yesterday I decided to start using my sewing machine for this projekt too.
For a nice beginning I made the three small blocks for det "Sewing Block".

I then decided to make a small tutorial to show you all,

how I made the blocks ready for appliqué easely.

When I had my blocks all made up, I did like this...

First I made a line of stitches 1/4" away from the edge using a stitch lenght 3.

Just like this.

Then I folded the fabris right at the stitches - nice and easy.

Finally I gave it a nice firm press using starch.

Remember to press from the front - you have to be able to see, what you are doing!

(Don´t ask me how I know!!!)

Remove the stitches.

Thats it!

Now I'm ready to use a bit of Roxanne Glue-Baste-It and appliqué my blocks in place!

Maybe tonight in front of the telly?

If there is something You don't understand, I'm sure google translat is to blame... or not?

SOME PROGRESS AT LAST

Home from Sydney and down with a virus. Better now and I started a block and didnt want to stop as they are quick and relatively easy to put together. After doing all these blocks I will put the first two rows together and then maybe I can start the next row of blocks.

I found the curves a bit challenging but liked the finished brolly.

i decided to go with the book title as it was one that I had read and enjoyed.

Doing this block I had a real craving for chocolate, not good for my figure.

This was a challenge and I ended up doing each petal separately and then had to sew a bigger centre to hide the ends but I liked the end result.

Hot chocolate, really enjoy a mug of this on cold nights.

Icecream....yummy, definately felt like one of these cones.

I liked this block and made my labels of places I have been.

I have finally started

I have finally started on my SKoW project. Having only joined in January-- I am already behind schedule. I am doing needleturn for this project. Initially, I was not going to as I am not very good with needleturn, but decided I would do it after all, as that is the only way to improve my technique. So please do not look too closely at the stitching, as some of them have little sharp points where they should not be. Hopefuul, these will improve. I have not done the embroidery or the wording as yet, but will do so when I have done the blocks for the first 2 rows.
I had bought Anni's "My Favourite Things"fabric at the Darling Harbour Show last year, and I have used some for another project-- but still have lots for this project as well, in combination with fabrics from my stash.
So Chooky, I hope I am not in too much trouble for being this far behind!

Even if I am not done with the part 1 row yet, I have finished all the applique for row 2 - January and February :-)

The blocks have been joined and I have added the strip border on the left side of the row.

It makes the January part all done, so Chooky, please write me down for January please :-)
I see that February includes the bottom border, so tomorrow it will be done too.

Needleturn applique is so nice - I did not expect it to catch me like this :-)

I have a confession to make...... I have finished my Some Kind of Wonderful top.....

After I joined in the stitch-a-long and started the blocks I realized this would be such a great quilt to hang in our shop's booth at the Norwegian Quilt association's yearly meeting in March, since we sell the book at the shop..... And I just kept going and going and.... well, you get the idea..... And all the sudden it was all done, and in time to get it quilted and bound before the meeting.

I do feel bad about not sticking with the monthly blocks, but I will be following everybody's progress! I think I might go ahead and make some more projects from the book now- there are so many pretty ones to choose from!

I'm not quite finished the row for January and February yet (but February isn't at all finished), but here are my blocks for January and some of February.Chocolates - who could resist??

The daisy just did not rock my boat so I've substituted 2 blocks - a bunch of flowers and music

and an ice cream - rum & raisin please

I wanted the cone to look realistic so I used my twin needle to criss cross the fabric to look like a waffle cone.

Off to organise the in-between blocks.

Hello, my name is Kathleen and I live in N.E Oklahoma on a cattle ranch with my husband, "the man of the place". We have 3 girls, all grown and we are soon to be grandparents, 2 boys. This quilt will be perfect for a girl and maybe next time.

I had found this book last year and fell in love with about all the patterns in it. Then I came across this blog and knew I wanted to a part of it, so I asked Cookyblue if I could be put me on the waiting list. Then two weeks ago today she emailed me to let me know I can join if I wish. Boy would I, and so I got busy getting caught up. So this is what I have so far and my goal is to have them all finished by the end of the month.

They are ready to applique. I do a lot of needle turned applique but I am trying to catch up so I 'm going to do invisible machine applique. On my blog I have a tutorial on how I do it if you are interested. It will look like needle turn. Then after I get them stitch down I work on the embroidery work.

Blocks for cold days :-)

When you girls down under are having summer, we in the northern part of the globe are having the worst part of winter (in my not so humble opinion).....
Cold, damp, snowy, but yet with promise of spring, since the days are getting longer since winter solstice.

Hot beverages are a must in my sewing corner, and a lit candle can brighten any cold, damp winter day!
The 2 beverage blocks are from part 1 (December) and part 3 (February)

I have not yet made the strips to go in between the block rows, but I will shortly, as soon as I get at least one row done.
I am making this quilt from my fabric collection, so I need to figure out which fabrics goes best with the blocks I have made.

Now to trace the Jane Austen book block, and maybe the jeans block ...

Never say never! or should it be - better late than never!

We have moved back in after our renovation and I subsequently have a sewing/study room! yeh - so no more dragging the machine out late at night and back away again before little hands get up in the morning!

This was the first time I had 'stiched in the ditch' on my machine. I used a cheap batting from spotlight with a really high loft - wouldn't recommend a high loft for first-time quilting on the machine! Its a little bit 'puffier' than I had imagined it would be.

I chose a relatively cheap star print from spotlight for the backing although I didn't wash it first and am now really worried that it will run.

So, its all done now. Thank you Chookyblue for organising this wonderful SAL. The work you put in is incredible. Its such a great way for people to come together and share inspiration, motivate and enjoy their hobbies together.

Stitching Started...

Finally I have managed in the last week and a bit to get some actual stitchy progress made...I started the stitching part, that in itself is progress!...so here are the first five applique blocks...

Sure, the stitchery isn't done, there is a bit missing from the suitcase (the name tag...oops! seems I forgot to include that bit when preparing the block) and the patty cakes need their cherry decorations but hey, it's a start and not too shabby for a week that also included two new working environments!...

I'm using a new-to-me applique technique, back basting, which, with the inevitable twist or two of "making it work for me", I'm finding enjoyable. I don't do the needle turn as you go along thing well...I just don't...it makes applique a misery and I always resort to the way I was taught back in the mid-1980s of basting the shapes then appliqueing...I think I've finally found an alternative way that I get along with even if I've reinvented the wheel a little bit in the way I go about it and my method is not strictly "by the book"...works for me and hey, what does it matter how we get there as long as we have fun and achieve the result we are after.

Now on to the January blocks on the list...after I give that suitcase a tag and the patty cakes their cherries on top!!

My first posting to the SAL blog - hello all :-)
Part 1 was due December 31……. I missed the deadline there…..
I have been in touch with SAL-mom Chookyblue, so we have a deal - thanks a lot Chooky - your kindness is much appreciated!

Part 2 was due January 31 - here it is above.
I am polishing my needleturn applique skills, and I am having a good time :-)

I am now working simultaneously on part 1 (the umbrella) and part 3 ( the ice cream)
Off to prep another part of part 1 or part 3 - have not decided which one yet :-)

A Question of care....

Please feel free to correct any of my misconceptions or down right untruths on the subject of care of needleturn appliqued quilts.
I assume needleturn applique, because very little fabric is turned under, is not as sturdy as buttonhole (machine or hand) applique. Therefore quilts made with this method of applique are not utilitarian ones, but are better left for display only.
When I made my GJ quilt, I would wash/rinse the embroideries before incorporating them in the blocks. On my needleturn blocks I have used a Karisma (ceramic) pen to help with placement. I would prefer to rinse it out rather than try to brush out.
Is this possible? Should I use something else instead?
I use a pigma pen for the bits that are embroidered over. That's okay because it gets hidden.
What are your thoughts?

December Blocks

Hi all, long time no post. I have finished my December blocks but was waiting the post once January's were done too but I am currently having a daisy phobia. All those skinny petals together with my dodgy needleturn skills & suddenly I'm busy elsewhere.

Anyway, I've promised my self to get on to those petals tonight while watching the latest Planet of the Apes movie (my mum's favourite so thought I better keep up the tradition for her).

I am loving December's blocks now the row is together.

As you can see I turned my patty cakes into a big slab of sponge with raspberry jam in the middle, raspberry icing, a blob of cream & strawberries. At first I thought my design genes were on holiday with my needleturn genes but now it is finished, I quite like it.

My favourite block so far is the travel block. It really started to appeal to me once I personalised the name & destinations. Of course a bag that size would only fit my quilting & knitting supplies for the trip, hence the Quilter Abroad label. I always pack those first, books second, presents third & then clothes, toiletries etc. On top goes a pictures of Brutus & Honey to put on my bedside table where ever the trip is taking me.

So for January the chocolates block is done & the stitchery for the daisy, so going to put on my big girl pants tonight & get that daisy done. I'm really enjoying doing the piecing between the blocks & adding a bit of colour to all the beautiful neutrals. It's on the agenda to do the side piecing too this weekend. Wish me luck!

New to the Group – Yippee!

Thank you Chooky for giving me the opportunity to join this wonderful group SAL, I am so excited to be stitching with wonderful people from all over the world.

I have been following all your work for a while now, I love everyones ideas and individual touches that are added. I get so excited when I see all the fabric selections used, they looking wonderful. I have started A Gardners Journal (I have a long way to finish) and Tis The Season is finished, just needs to be quilted.

So now I am ready to start Some Kind of Wonderful. I have chosen my main fabric, just now rganizing background. I think I am going to blanket stitch this quilt as many of the UFO’s I have at the moment are all needle turned. I think a change will be nice.

Cold and Frosty Finish

Good Afternoon everyone.

I finished stitching the Jan and Feb blocks together this morning. I took them outside for a little photoshoot - it was a very cold and frosty morning here in the UK today. I made just one change - to the hot chocolate block. I'm not a big fan of hot choc but I am a huge fan of coffee so my mug is a mug of hot coffee instead.

The first picture is of my top and bottom borders. Thank you so much for the reminder to make these now as I'd totally forgotten and wasn't planning to make them until the end.

The second picture is of the Jan and Feb blocks stitched to the December blocks. Each time I make a new block I think it's my new favourite, they're all lovely.

I'm itching to start on the house block now but will hold off a little while and work on a couple of other projects first of all. I don't need much encouragement to stitch the blocks themselves but being part of the stitch a long is definitely keeping me on track stitching the sashings and borders together.

Here is a pictures of the last three blocks I stitched, I did two of them just the past week and half way done with the seventh. Half way there and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!!! I hope everyone else that hasn't finished yet will pick them back up in time for next Christmas. The closer I get the more excited I am to finish this little beauty.

I now have 2 blocks finished for my SKOW quilt,and my 3rd is nearly finished as well,this quilt will be for my grand-daughter Madie, and she has picked the fabrics for this quilt.

My Favourite Things Quilt

I'm having a bit of trouble putting this quilt down at the moment !! Last night while I was watching the ladies final of the Australian Open Tennis, I prepared and ironed on the March blocks so they will be ready for stitching when I feel like it!! I've never been this far ahead on a stitch a long project before ..... so while I'm on a roll ....... preparation is halfway there!! Is anyone else having trouble putting it down??? Nice to be moving along with this quilt. Thankyou ChookyBlue , a lovely way to note ones progress.

One of my favourite chocolates was `Cadbury` roses chocolates hence the rose background fabric. Sad to say I can`t eat these anymore as lactose in tolerant.

I found a little zip lock bag with some tiny pieces in it and nearly threw it out.

But I decided to do a little investigating and then made these.

A Question Answered

Fiona @Dragonfly-crafts asked an excellent question today about exactly what you need to have the month officially completed. I have answered her in the comments, but thought I would post this here too so you can all see it easily in case anyone else has a question. (Chookyblue, feel free to correct me if I have it wrong!)

the plan!

To have the month completed you need to complete and show all of the blocks allocated for that month. Each month has some applique blocks, some blocks of squares, and a block of strips and squares. They don't have to be joined together, but can be if you like. You'll notice that the top and bottom blocks of strips and squares are allocated to February and March and won't be able to be joined until everything else is finished. Hope that clears everything up. Keep up the good work girls! I know just from the glimpses you have been showing here on the blog that these quilts are going to be gorgeous! Must get back to mine.

I'm reading the left hand side of our blog page and noticed that September is for piecing all blocks together....

But am I right that we don't get our letters beside our names until our blocks are put together in our long strips.

Then I understand October is for Quilting.

Wow .... what a great day I have had!!! Stitching away happily ..... and this little baby didn't let me down!! This has been a great workout for my new friend "Bliss"!!

And so now Miss Chooky ....... what have we here???? December, January and February (yes .... that's February's bottom binding hanging over the line there too!!) Whew!!!! Now I can get onto some other projects I have to do in the next couple of weeks and not worry about missing February deadline!! Thanks Chooky for cracking the whip ..... I have had a fantastic day!! Amazing what you can do with a day away from the office and no phones ringing!!

And by the way ... is it just me or is everyone having trouble taking photos of such a loooooooong project???? I took it over to the next door clothesline .... the wind was blowing .... the puppy was wanting to help .... and this is trying to get it to stay still for just a moment!! You'd think I would know better...heaven knows I've done enough of these SALs with Chookyblue to know that she doesn't give out ticks until the entire months work is complete!

I don't know whether I was ignoring the instructions, or misunderstood, or what, but I somehow thought I would get away with doing December and Januarys blocks without the border strips!

Silly me!

Anyhow, after reading the blog post below and coming to the horrifying conclusion that I was officially behind (heaven forbid!!!) I got off my butt and put those strips on quick smart!

Could I please, even pretty please, have December and January blocks after my name Chookyblue?

(Please tell me I'm not the only one who did this...feeling a bit silly LOL)

Hi Ladies
yay i am finally up to date, for a couple of days anyway.
See, my border and sahings are all in place, although don't look to close as one of my sashings is sewn on the wrong side, i will blame it on the extremely hot weather and don't tell Suzitee as i am not unpicking it. (unpicking is not in my sewing vocabulary) Luckily its a tone on tone and quite hard to see.

I have also finished my January blocks and although i did have a thought to change the chocolate block to cheese i left it alone as there are a few other blocks i will have to change.

Now if only i can get up to date on all my other projects i will be one happy girl.(I'm dreaming).

If you live in QLD i hope you are not getting to wet or flooded out and if you live in Perth-as i do, stay cool, and to all the Aussie ladies, Happy Australia Day and to everyone else Happy Thursday.

And I'm still working on December's blocks! Which would be admirable if I was learning needle turn appliqué, but I'm raw edge machining this quilt people!!!

This is my suitcase block. It's going to say "the beach at sunset". I do like the beach, but I mostly only travel to my local beach, hence the suitcase change.

And this is my cup of tea block. (I don't drink tea. Or coffee for that matter.) But I do stitch! A lot!
I'm working on the other blocks too. My umbrella block features an umbrella, and is finished. Phew!

I'm busy stitching and hope to have December finished soon. We are moving house next week, but I know that sewing and stitching will be fitted in around the moving because it's what keeps me sane and everyone here loves living with a sane wife and mother!

Last october I received a fabulous gift for my birthday !!

A princess skirt !!

I met Marie, a very gifted designer in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines during our european quilt exhibition in September 2011.
Marie makes sooooooooo beautiful dresses !!
I asked her to make a pink skirt for me. I chose the fabrics and colors and... here it is !

Can you see the lovely lacing-up in the back ?????
She made me the black top too !!

I LOVE this skirt so much that I asked Marie if I can put it in my SKoW quilt.
She's so nice ! She gave me a sketch and little samplers of the same fabrics of my skirt...
and I make this :

Now I can tell you my deepest wish... to get the whole wardrobe of Arwen !!! ( you know the Elvish girl...) Of course it will need to be resized... but... all we need is DREAM !!!

Slow But Steady

Chookie has cracked the whip so I'm sharing my blocks. Two done so far - one in the final stages - and I'm still plugging away. We had a loss in the family and a very serious illness over the holidays so I'm behind. I'm confident I can catch up soon. I'm actually enjoying the challenges of appliqué!

This is my first appliqué ever! So much fun!

And this is my second appliqué ever! Woot! I changed the text - I love dancing in rain puddles!

They photographed rather dark. I'm using traditional needleturn for the larger pieces and spray-starch appliqué for the smaller ones. I'm changing my patty cakes into cup cakes, but the frosting has gone a bit wonky.

Chookie, just a FYI, it's going to be a long time before you can update the sidebar for me. I'm using charm packs. I'm waiting until the end to cut up any leftover charm squares into those small sashing squares.

Finally I am back in the game...

November last year I jumped out of the starting block, full steam ahead on SKOW. I did one block and then I don't know what happened ... Oh thats right Christmas.

So finally I am back in the game and trying very hard to catch up. Just wanted to share "patty cakes" and "old blue jeans" blocks with you. I don't know why I waited so long to get back into it, these blocks are alot of fun. And with each block I fall in love with this fabric even more.

Oh well no resting for the wicked... its back to stitching for me.

TTS at the Dapto Show

the goals are written on the left sidebar and more importantly there is a simple photo to show you what has to be done each month. I only update the sidebar when I see the section as per the sidebar.

There has been lots of blocks popping up here and there but we I don't mark that off until I see the sections done....................

Also if you could let me know if I have made any mistakes updating the sidebar..................

It was wonderful to see a couple of finished Tis the Season Quilts............one finished Gardener's Journal quilt and a couple made it to the top stage.............it is so exciting................

The best part is seeing every enjoying their stitching on the quilts...........everyone giving it a go and learning something.............well done and keep up the great stitching...............

December Blocks Sewn (if not together)

I'm still to sew the December strip, but at least I have the blocks sewn. I loved the jeans, but I don't think these were my old ones - my legs are NOT that long. Though I did have some buttoned and not zippered ones when I was young.
The suitcase was fun. I should have made the New Zealand 'sticker' look a lot older. I went there in 1978 when I was in my early twenties. (Yes, I know some of you were still in nappies.) At the time all an Aussie needed was a return ticket - no document of identification, passport or visa.
Many years later, and only about 6 years ago, we went to Norfolk Island. That's the 'NIs' one. Singapore was next in 2010. We chose Singapore because it was just far enough to go to see if I could handle a long plane flight. It turned out to be a wonderful destination and I'd go back tomorrow. Then late last year, we finally got to England.
I hope my suitcase gets lots more stickers one day.
I have a question but I'll save that for another post.

I was very excited this am to read that I am now able to join the S-A-L group of eager sewing ladies. I had enquired about joining, but realised I had to have a blog. With Chooky's very patient assisitance, I now have a blog and am learning to do posts, take photos to add to the blog etc.
So now I can start on the quilt as well. I had actually bought the book at the Darling Harbour quilt show in June 2011--- put it aside to one day start the quilt! Now I have no excuse but to start the quilt.
I will have to look at my fabric stash--- which is growing everytime I look at it-- and choose my fabrics.
I am looking forward to joining a lovely bunch of ladies with the same interests.

January/February Section

I put together my blocks and sashing to make the two panels for January/February part

of the December section. Right away, I see problems and will need to take out

stitching and redo that section....I hate redos but it

won't look right unless I

correct that mistake....I must have measured wrong

when I trimmed my background pieces after the applique was

completed. The patchwork section on the bottom

is a little lower than the one on the first panel...And

see that place in the sashing strips where I have two squares

in the same place.

I think I can correct it without too much

hassle.

I stitched the cherry on top of one of the Chocolates...

I used a button for the Daisy center

and the cherry on top of the ice cream.

I loved the way the book looked when I

finished it.

I seldom drink hot Chocolate so

I've made this hot coffee instead.

I know there is a bottom panel to do before

I can actually say I'm up through February.

I will get that done in a few days although it

can't be added until more of the panels are finished.

I really enjoy doing these appliques

but I think I'm going to work on something else for

the next few weeks.

SKofW - January Greetings from Finland

Here is my SKofW blocks for January.

Once again I did some changes...

For the chocolates block I found nice Confections fabric (designed by Jennifer Huber for R. Kaufman). I also replaced yum - word with nam ;o) Chocolates are really one of my favorite things... May I tell you a secret? At last Christmas I ate ALL TOO MUCH confections... several boxes...

Maybe that is the reason, why my trousers feel like shrunken... hm, :o/...

Let's look the other block now!

On that

I added finnish word kukkaniityt, which is the flowering meadow in english... or something like that...

I just love the summer and wild flowers; especially hare-bells are my favorites...

I hope you don't mind, if I sew sashing and border stripes later... (I'm planning to sew them after all applique and patchwork). If you wonder why... it's only that I haven't yet decided my stripe fabrics... and there is a new fabric range coming from Moda / 3 Sisters called 'Papillon', which I would like to use in this quilt...

Finally a start....

Over the past few nights I had my trusty rotary cutter working flat out. I have finally decided what fabric's to put where and labeled them all ready to go.

I have decided to go with the needle turn applique technique.
I started with the patty cakes.....

Next I completed the umbrella....

I'm really enjoying watching everyone's progress on this quilt

Sunday Show and Tell

I have a little something to show you today :)

After a rather extended stay at the quilters (almost 12 months!) I am very very excited to show you my completed A Gardeners Journal quilt! WOOOHOOOOOO!

Such bright colours! Such wonderful texture! Such glorious completion! LOL

The quilting was worth the wait, it is really lovely...

...especially from the back :)

I sat in the lovely cool airconditioning this morning and stitched a label to finish it off...

...and now it's hanging in my lounge room! Words can't really express how happy I am to have this quilt finished...thanks to all of you wonderful girls for your support and encouragement along the way :)
